Services and Features of NVS
Radiographs (x-rays) allow our doctors to better diagnose injuries, illness, and other medical conditions in your pet. Our on-site radiology suite with automatic processor means we can provide high quality x-rays with same day results! We perform a range of surgeries at NVS, including (but not limited to):
All orthopedic surgeries and certain specialized surgeries (such as spinal surgery) are referred to a board-certified surgical specialist. All surgical patients receive a pre-op physical exam by one of our doctors, an anesthetic protocol based on their individual needs, a comprehensive pain management strategy, a sterile surgical pack, and a monitored recovery. Our doctors highly recommend that all surgical patients receive additional pain medications to go home in order to optimize healing in addition to preventing pain. All surgical patients (with the exception of life-threatening emergencies) must be up-to-date on the following:
Our surgical suite is fully equipped with 2 surgical tables; 2 gas anesthesia machines; a suction unit; cautery; monitors to measure heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, oxygenation, and temperature; patient warming devices; a full range of surgical instruments and suture materials; and an autoclave to sterilize all instruments/materials used. We strive to provide the safest anesthesia experience possible for your pet. In addition to the monitoring equipment listed above, a veterinary technician is dedicated to monitoring your pet throughout anesthesia. Our doctors utilize the safest anesthetics available, and tailor the drugs used to your pet’s individual needs. Because your pet’s dental health is so important to us, our doctors will evaluate your pet’s teeth at every visit. Any dental health concerns and recommendations will be discussed at that time. Just as humans are advised to see their dentist every 6 months, our pets get maximum benefit from dental cleanings if performed BEFORE significant disease is evident! Dental disease can affect every organ system in your pet’s body, in addition to causing them chronic pain, difficulty eating, and bad breath. Our dental cleanings include general anesthesia, a comprehensive oral exam, ultrasonic scaling of all teeth and subgingiva, polishing of all teeth, and fluoride treatment. We are also able to perform surgical extraction of teeth if necessary for your pet. Our doctors highly recommend that all dental patients undergoing extractions receive additional pain medications to go home in order to optimize healing in addition to preventing pain. FEBRUARY IS NATIONAL PET DENTAL HEALTH MONTH! To celebrate dental health month, NVS offers a discount on dental prices during the month of February!!! Our in-house laboratory allows us to get accurate and quick results in order to better treat your pet. Tests we are able to run in-house include:
We also utilize outside labs such as MSU to run more specialized tests. Dr. Kieren has a special interest in reproduction and has attended many hours of continuing education in this field (in addition to showing/breeding her own Boston Terriers!). We provide a full range of breeding services, including:
At NVS, we not only care for dogs and cats, we also see exotic pets such as ferrets, chinchillas, guinea pigs, birds, and reptiles. A microchip is a device the size of a grain of rice that is inserted under the skin of your pet. The chip contains an identification number specific to your pet and registered with your contact information in a database. When stray or lost animals arrive at animal shelters or vet clinics, they are scanned for a microchip – if one is present the scanner will read its number. The shelter/vet clinic can then contact you to let you know your pet has been found! |
